4 Ways to Inspire Others with Your Blog

by Kiesha Easley on February 1, 2011 · 35 comments

In today’s guest post, Kiesha Easley asks the question, “Does your blog inspire or irritate others?”  Most of us hope our blog inspires people, but are there design items on our sites that irritate our readers instead?  Going beyond blog design, what can we do, as bloggers, to ensure that our blogs are inspiring?  Keep reading as Kiesha gives us four great suggestions to do just that.

I love spending an afternoon traveling the blogosphere from blog to blog.  There’s so much to choose from and whenever I run across a blog post that causes me to pause and consider trying something new, it leaves me feeling renewed and rejuvenated.  It sparks something within me and soon, I’m full of fresh writing ideas that just pour onto the page.

That’s the very essence of inspiration, which means ‘to breathe life into’ – it’s no wonder an inspiring blog post is priceless.

One the other hand, there are blogs that immediately creep me out when I click on to their site.  I’m paralyzed by the pop-ups and blinded by flashing ads – there’s fear that something ugly is lurking behind the peeling page.  On top of that, there’s no “About Me” page to be found.  It leaves me wondering if anyone lives there at all – a haunted house is more welcoming.

Perhaps, that’s not the owner’s intention, but that’s the result, nonetheless.  I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt, so perhaps, it’s pure ignorance on their part.  But there are better ways to blog.  There are ways to create a blog that inspires rather than repels.

Here are some tips to ensure your blog is inspiring:

#1 – Be a Positive Example

Avoid using your blog as a venting outlet.  Angry rants and complaints might be entertaining to some, but for the most part, all it does is spread negative emotions.  Negativity is contagious – rather than contribute to some poor innocent reader’s bad mood, why not pose questions and spark a discussion about the topic instead?  You’ll end up with positive solutions that could help everyone.

#2 – Strive to Produce Quality Content

People are searching for information that will help them solve a problem.  They see Google as a way to find answers, not make you money.  Give them what they are searching for – writing blog posts that demonstrate how you solved the same problems or overcame the same obstacles is a great way to do that.

#3 – Challenge People to Action

An inspiring blog is one that encourages people and ensures them that their goals can be met with some planning and focus.  Give them a little guidance and real tips that work.  Motivate your readers with blog posts that challenge them to take action.  Even small steps towards a goal will lead them closer to success.

#4 – Treat them Well

Everybody wants to feel special and cared about, so greet your readers who take the time to leave comments with enthusiasm – as if they were an old friend.  Provide genuine responses to comments.  Go the extra mile and visit their blogs.  While you’re there, take the time to leave a comment and share their content on Twitter and Facebook as well.

When you take the time to plant these seeds of inspiration on your blog, you’ll begin to see new sprouts of reader interaction.  As your blog grows, you’ll begin to see the fruit of those you have helped.

There’s nothing more inspiring to me than receiving a personal testimony from someone my blog has helped.  It lets me know that blogs have the power to influence others and make a huge difference in their lives.

Are you taking this aspect of blogging for granted?  What could you do to create a more inspiring blog?

Hey, Kiesha. Thanks for this great guest post. Your first suggestion of being a positive example is one that I take to heart. It’s not just in what we write, but also in how we conduct ourselves online. We leave our digital footprints everywhere we travel on the internet, but I think sometimes we forget about that. Be a positive example when commenting, tweeting, or updating your status on Facebook too.

Hi Kiesha, another awesome guest post. I hope you plan to include me in your blog hops soon!
I’m always inspired after reading one of your posts and I suspect that why you have built such a strong following on your blogs. I find many bloggers forget to include the “call to action” in their posts.
Using CommentLuv and Commenters widgets is another great way to make your readers feel special and promote the positive aspects of your blogging community.

Great article that will surely a big help for many bloggers to improve their blog. I mostly like the “be a positive example” since I experienced that the negativity is spread and there is no people that like to infected by the negativity.

Kiesha,
I’m glad I’m following you – this is a great post. I too enjoy my time spent exploring the blogosphere (what a great word!)
When I started my blog in November, I thought I’d do some tongue-in-cheek ranting, but that never happened. We wanted people to feel “renewed and rejuvenated ” exactly as you said! That’s one of the guidelines for creating a post.
One thing I never counted on was the richness of the community of bloggers. My initial impression was that bloggers were all standing alone on their soap boxes talking to the masses, but they’re not. They’re all at a party and everyone is welcome! How fun is that!?

Echoes of several other bloggers and Webinars I’ve heard in recent weeks. Blogs for business far too much self-promote….and frankly I would enjoy them more if I knew they weren’t trying shove their agenda down my throat. ~ Blogs need to serve 2 main purposes 1) provide solutions to people’s problems, 2) provide relevant information/advice so people can solve their problems.

Keep up the great blogging!

Hi Alicia,
I agree with you – if those bloggers would stop trying so hard, and actually connect with their readers on a human level, they’d accomplish so much more. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hi Kiesha, I hadn’t really thought about the word inspiration before but now that you mention it of course…breathe life into…it makes total sense.I particularly love your suggestion to include a challenge of some sort. I think this is a great idea, which will motivate me as well as my readers. I also agree with you big time on the positivity point…reading a rant really turns me off. Btw…I also tend to get lost in the blogosphere every now and then, blog hopping madly and loving every minute of it.Thanks for this ‘inspirational’ post Kiesha.

Hi Rosemary,
Don’t worry, you’re not alone when it comes to getting lost in the blogosphere. :D I get lost all the time and before I realize it several hours have passed and I have no idea how I ended up wherever I ended up or what I was doing before or what I should be doing next. It’s quite puzzling – but fun, definitely!

Hey Kiesha,

Thanks for the awesome post!

You are really good at inspiring people yourself! I think this post was right up your alley and was fairly easy for you to put your thoughts together. You always promote good content and I also believe that what everyone should do. You should never want to do anything half ass.

&& ofcourse always treat people how you would like to be treated in return.

Thanks again!

God bless,

Also, only blog when we have something important to say. I think a lot of people blog just to do it, meet a weekly quota or whatever. I think that has been shifting in the last year or so. I like Scott (Unmarketing) Stratten’s approach of doing an outstanding blog post every once in a while. Good stuff, and food for thought.
(Loved the article, BTW!)

Hi. Good day. First of all, I want to thank you for posting these useful tips in blogging. I am also a blogger and I used to do blogging for personal purposes at first. Until then, someone offered me to blog for his site. I just grabbed that opportunity for I am enjoying while earning. Your tips above are very true. Your first point had hit my thoughts. Well, I agree that writers must be a positive example. It may be dramatic to read a blog full of failures, tragedy and pain, but we have to think that most Internet-users are searching to get more information instead of reading the blog full of anxiety. Hence, I also agree that the content must be informative which could be considered as beneficial to the readers. Hmm, I think I am on my long way of opinions so thank you again for the effort of posting this.

Hi Jane,
I think bloggers can successfully share failures, tragedy and pain as long as the purpose is to teach a valuable lesson. That puts a positive spin on misfortune, which in my opinion, is totally fine. When I say be a positive example, I don’t mean be delusional – I just mean avoid complaining just for the sake of complaining without solutions and avoid actions that tear others down.

..in fact it’s not an easy job to be inspiring to others.. especially when it comes to gain such reputation and respect from the readers and gaining followers.. however I always believe that if you can be helpful to others by providing information that they need and giving your valuable opinions on the things that related to them.. you can be one of the inspiring person over the Internet.

Thanks Kiesha for your inspiring post! :)

The hardest part of blogging, on a personal level that I’ve found, is getting people to take action – you pour yourself into ever piece of content and give people action steps, it’s almost disheartening to know that people are reading it just for the hell of it – I want action takers! I’ve got to try to see if there are new ways to get people moving toward with the ideas ya know? Like some kind of tracker or small group behind each item :D

Hi Murlu!
I totally understand how you feel. But I’ve learned that most people aren’t action takers – for whatever reason. As bloggers we have no control over that, but we can keep on the look out for those who are and guide them in the right direction. It can be frustrating – I’ve tried to help people, but in then end I can’t do the work for them, they have to do be willing to do it.

Walter February 6, 2011 at 8:08 pm

The guidelines you have provided here are sadly neglected by most bloggers, and so they fail online. In order to inspire others we should look within ourselves and find out our commonality with others and put that element into blogging. It is unfortunate that the primary intention of most blogs is to monetize, and not to give value to others. :-)

Yeah, that is a sad truth, but there’s so much more than can be accomplished by helping others – the return on that investment is infinite.

“The root of inspiration is ‘to breathe life into’” is a really good way to express the idea behind giving back with not just what you say but how you say it. I think a lot of people forget that writing well is at the heart of good blogging. Love to see you note examples of people you think are doing a great job writing. How about it?

This is really true. Striving to produce quality content does not only satisfy your readers with valuable information but this is also one way to generate good traffic to your site. It’s like hitting birds with one stone. You generate more traffic to your site and at the same time making more readers follow you.

Number 4 is a very important step because this is what really keeps people coming back for your stuff. If you give them enough attention, and you give them what they want, they’ll really be back to read more from you.
